Tequila Distillery Tour | La Ruta del Tequila: 4 Legendary Distilleries in One Day

Embark on the ultimate Tequila Distillery Tour—a full-day journey through the heart of Jalisco’s agave country. Known worldwide as La Ruta del Tequila, this UNESCO-recognized region is home to the most iconic names in tequila. With visits to Don Valente, Tres Mujeres, José Cuervo, and Fortaleza, this curated experience blends heritage, tradition, and flavor into one unforgettable adventure.

Whether you’re a first-time visitor to Mexico or a seasoned tequila enthusiast, this tour offers the best of both worlds: the artistry of boutique producers and the legendary presence of the world’s most famous tequila houses. Guided by a bilingual expert and with private transportation from Guadalajara, you’ll enjoy comfort, exclusivity, and a true taste of Mexican culture.

Why Book a Tequila Distillery Tour?

A tequila tour is more than just tastings—it’s an immersion into Mexico’s history and craftsmanship. Tequila is not only a drink; it’s part of Mexico’s cultural identity, born from centuries of agave cultivation and distillation methods passed down through generations. By choosing a guided Tequila Distillery Tour, you’ll walk through the same distilleries that helped shape tequila into the spirit it is today while discovering modern innovations and boutique styles along the way.

Your Journey on La Ruta del Tequila

Your day begins in Guadalajara, where a private, air-conditioned vehicle will pick you up from your hotel, Airbnb, or even directly from the airport. From there, the adventure begins as you drive through the rolling agave fields that stretch endlessly across the Jalisco highlands—a sight so unique it’s recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Landscape.

Throughout the day, your bilingual guide will share insights into tequila’s origins, production methods, and cultural importance. Every stop has been carefully selected to showcase a different side of tequila-making, ensuring you get the most well-rounded experience possible.

Don Valente Distillery

The first stop is Don Valente, a boutique gem that represents small-batch production at its finest. This family-run distillery gives you an intimate look at artisanal tequila-making, from hand-harvested agave to slow-cooked piñas. You’ll learn why independent producers are so vital to preserving authenticity in the industry and enjoy tastings that reflect true craftsmanship.

Tres Mujeres

Next, you’ll visit Tres Mujeres, a rustic and scenic distillery where tradition meets innovation. Surrounded by agave fields, this stop allows you to walk through the very fields where the tequila journey begins. The setting is picturesque and authentic, giving you a sense of Mexico’s deep agricultural roots.

José Cuervo – La Rojeña

No Tequila Distillery Tour would be complete without a stop at José Cuervo’s La Rojeña, the oldest active distillery in Latin America. Founded in 1758, La Rojeña is synonymous with tequila history. Here, you’ll gain perspective on how tequila evolved from a regional spirit to a global icon. The tasting at José Cuervo includes classic and premium selections, showcasing the range of Mexico’s most recognized brand.

Fortaleza

Finally, you’ll arrive at Fortaleza, often described as the Holy Grail of tequila for connoisseurs. Known for using traditional production methods like stone tahona wheels and copper pot stills, Fortaleza stands as a living museum of how tequila was made generations ago. Walking through the historic distillery and tasting its world-renowned tequilas is an experience every tequila lover dreams of.

Optional Stop at Cantaritos El Güero

On the way back to Guadalajara, your tour includes the option to stop at Cantaritos El Güero. Famous for its giant citrus cocktails served in clay cups, this lively spot is a favorite among locals and a perfect way to toast the end of your tequila journey.

This tour was awesome. Super smooth pickup, cool guide, and every stop felt different. Tres Mujeres had great views, Don Valente was super chill and local, Cuervo was huge and historic, and Fortaleza? Just wow. We had time to walk around Tequila after and grab a cantarito, honestly felt like a full-on experience, not just tastings. If you’re in Guadalajara, don’t skip this.

  2. Liam Wilson

Visiting from Texas with my wife. Huge fan of Fortaleza and it was our first time in Tequila and Guadalajara. We didn’t know what to expect, but the tour was fantastic! Pick-up was right on time and our first stop was Tres Mujeres, a beautiful distillery where we learned a ton.

From there we got to meet Don Valente at Fortaleza, which was such a special experience. We also stopped at José Cuervo, with so much history and really cool to see in person. To top it off, we finished the day with a cantarito, and I have never seen a cocktail that big in my life. My god almighty!
